Bio
Jennifer A. Polack is a Full Professor of Computer Science at the University of Mary Washington. Born and raised in Mineola, on Long Island, NY, Jennifer spent her early years lifeguarding and working at Blockbuster—where some of her longest friendships began. Though she relocated to Florida in 1993, Long Island remains close to her heart; she returns each year to attend the Egan Family Picnic, a cherished tradition that’s been running for over 50 years.
Jennifer earned her B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Scranton, where she nearly switched majors until her mother’s candid advice and a memorable challenge from a professor inspired her to persevere. That same professor later became a professional peer, proving that early doubts don’t define future success.

She received a full scholarship to Pace University, completing her M.S. in Computer Science in just 14 months while commuting daily to downtown NYC. Her academic journey continued at the University of South Florida, where she earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering in December 1997. By then, she was already serving as a lecturer and laying the groundwork for a career that would blend research, teaching, and mentorship.
Jennifer teaches programming, software engineering, game development, graphics, and digital storytelling at the University of Mary Washington. Her academic work has led to numerous peer-reviewed publications on computer science education, student collaboration, and interdisciplinary learning. During spring break, she has developed a series of study abroad programs, including a Digital Storytelling course in Brazil, Argentina, and Iceland. Plans for future trips include Machu Picchu and, eventually, a semester at sea.
Outside the classroom, Jennifer is venturing into the world of fiction writing, drawing on years of experience in narrative-driven educational technology. In the 2010s, she led a project with her students to create educational games aligned with Virginia’s Standards of Learning, using storytelling as a powerful pedagogical tool. This work ignited a deeper interest in character development, emotional resonance, and story structure—elements that now shape her fiction.
Jennifer lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia, with her two children, Oliver and Brianna. Oliver is graduated from Radford University, while Brianna studies Chemical Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her best friend Bruce, along with his wife Martha and daughter Coralie, are part of the extended family that makes Fredericksburg feel like home.
